A light fitting can be a beautiful object. But I begin to find its place in an interior through everyday moments: reading before bed, preparing dinner, talking around a table or winding down at the end of the day.

Only when I understand those moments is it easier to talk about the kind of lighting, its position and the atmosphere we want to create.

What do you do there?

A work surface calls for a different relationship with light than a place to rest. I like to walk through a space while imagining an ordinary day. Where does the morning begin? Where do you work? Where do people gather in the evening?

I also look at natural light. It is an important part of a space, but it does not replace planning for how the room is used after dark.

Lighting is connected to the layout

The position of a table, bed or reading chair affects lighting choices. I consider these things together. When the layout changes, it is worth looking at the lighting plan again.

In a small bedroom, for example, a pendant light may free up space on a bedside table. Whether it is a good solution depends on the bed, the height and position of the fitting, and the needs of the person using the room.

How do you want to control the light?

Alongside the appearance of a fitting, I care about where the light is switched on and which sources we want to use together. Would you like everything on at once, or just a few gentler sources in the evening?

These are questions for the planning stage. The technical details and possibilities need to be agreed with the appropriate specialists and matched to the chosen equipment.

Atmosphere comes from relationships

I look at light alongside materials, tones and layout. I am interested in what it draws attention to, how textures appear and how the whole space feels.

Every corner does not have to be equally bright. What matters is that the choices follow what we do in the space and the feeling we want to create.

Before asking “which light fitting should we choose?”, I ask “how will we live here?”.

Starting there makes it easier to connect function and appearance. The chosen fitting then has a clear place in the whole, and lighting becomes part of a considered space.
